The first Japanese Grand Prix was led in 1976 on the Fuji Speedway circuit. In 1977, the Canadian Gilles Villeneuve's car after a crash, falls behind the safety barriers killing two spectators, in a place closed to the public.
Consequently, Japan was excluded from the F1 calendar. It was only in 1987 that the Formula 1 returned to Japan on the circuit of Suzuki.
In 1990, Aguri Suzuki finishing in third place becomes the first Japanese driver to be on a podium in Formula 1.
